    Foundry Fluxes and Refiners

Effective degassing, removal of impurities, and optimal quality of the molten metal.

Fluxes and refiners are specialized chemical preparations in powder or compact form, used in the process of preparing the metal bath. Their main task is to clean the molten alloy from non-metallic inclusions, degas the metal, and protect its surface from oxidation before and during casting.

How do fluxes and refiners work?

Refining and covering preparations enter into an immediate reaction with the impurities present in the molten metal:

    • Removal of inclusions and drossing/slagging: They bind oxides and other non-metallic impurities, discharging them into the slag layer, which is easily separated from the clean metal.
    • Effective degassing: They help in the safe release of gases from the metal bath, preventing the formation of porosity.
    • Surface protection: They create a protective layer on the metal bath, limiting heat losses and preventing renewed contact of the molten alloy with the atmosphere.

Key benefits for foundries and steelworks

    • Elimination of gas holes and porosity – a clean metal structure without internal defects.
    • Higher metallurgical cleanliness – effective separation of slag and impurities from the clean alloy.
    • Better fluidity and castability of the metal – more accurate filling of foundry molds.
    • Protection against scrap – a drastic reduction in the number of castings rejected due to gas and structural defects.

    PEDMO fluxes and refiners offer

We provide a full range of preparations tailored for the refining and protection of non-ferrous metal alloys (e.g., aluminum, copper) as well as steel and cast iron:

    • LITAL – a synthetic covering-refining slag for deoxidizing and preparing aluminum alloys.
    • TOPNIK 2M – protection of molten metal and removal of impurities (recommended for melting aluminum alloys, except AlMg).
    • POKAL 3 and POKAL 6 – synthetic protective-refining slags for preparing molten metal from aluminum and its alloys (e.g., AK12, PA1, PA2).
    • TOPHUT S – a highly effective covering-refining slag for remelting tin-zinc-lead bronzes from charges with a high amount of impurities.
    • TOPMOS S-1/V – a synthetic slag with a low melting point (720–790°C) for standard and leaded brasses.
    • UNITOP BA-1, UNITOP M, UNITOP MHS – specialized refining-covering preparations for bronzes and brasses melted in induction furnaces.
    • ALRAF – a nitrogen refining agent in tablet form for the safe refining of aluminum and casting alloys (without the use of toxic substances).
    • LONGGAZ – a refiner in the form of a degassing tablet, undergoing controlled decomposition, dedicated to the refining of bronzes.
    • SLAG COAGULANT 258 CG – a specialized preparation for thickening and binding slag in the casting process of cast iron, cast steel, and steel.

    Technical specification

    • Physical form: Dry mixtures, granulates, refining briquettes/tablets (e.g., ALRAF, LONGGAZ).
    • Application: Refining, degassing, drossing/slagging, coagulation, and protection of the metal bath.
    • Usage: Aluminum alloys, copper, brasses, bronzes, cast iron, and steel.
    • Dosing method: Into the furnace, into the ladle (to the bottom or the surface).
